Denim weights ranked: what the ounce numbers mean and which to buy for each season
Denim's ounce number (fabric weight per square yard) predicts nearly everything about how a pair of jeans will wear: break-in time, drape, season, and how dramatically it fades. Here is every weight class, ranked.
Featherweight (under 11oz)
Summer denim and shirt-weight fabric. Drapes soft from day one, zero break-in, but fades are faint and knees bag out quickly. Best for hot climates and anyone who hates stiff jeans. Rank last for longevity - treat as a two-season piece.
Lightweight (11-13oz)
The everyday standard, and where most quality jeans live. Comfortable within a week, holds shape, fades moderately. For a first (or only) good pair, 12-13oz unsanforized or sanforized selvedge is the correct answer: enough body to fade honestly, light enough to wear nine months a year.
Midweight (13-16oz)
The enthusiast sweet spot. Noticeable structure, crisp creases at the honeycombs, and the best fade contrast per ounce. Break-in takes two to four weeks of real wear. This class earns its keep for anyone who wears denim four-plus days a week; it is overkill for occasional wearers who will never log the hours the fades require.
Heavyweight (16-21oz)
The fade hobbyist's class. Stands up on its own out of the box, produces electric high-contrast fades, and shrugs off years of abrasion. The costs: a genuine break-in period (some wearers size for the waist to relax an inch), summer heat, and a stiff hand some never warm to. Buy heavyweight as a second or third pair, not a first.
Ultra-heavy (21oz and up)
A novelty that happens to be excellent. Practically armor, with fade results to match, but the comfort trade is real - these are winter-only, commitment-level jeans. Rank them last for normal humans and first for the person who already knows they want them.
The ranked verdict
For one pair: 12-13oz. For a rotation: add 14-16oz as the winter driver. Heavyweight and ultra-heavy only after you know you love the break-in ritual. Weight above all else determines whether jeans become a favorite or a closet resident - buy the class that matches how many hours you will actually log.
