Heat management is physics: airflow plus moisture handling. Here is the honest ranking for hot weather, from coolest to sweatiest.
1. Linen
The open weave and hollow flax fiber move air better than anything else in common use. Linen also absorbs a fifth of its weight in moisture before feeling damp. The wrinkles are the price of admission. 10/10 cool.
2. Seersucker
The puckered weave holds most of the fabric off your skin, creating micro air channels. Traditionally cotton, so it absorbs well too. Criminally underused outside the American South. 9/10.
3. Lightweight cotton (poplin, voile, chambray)
Breathable and absorbent, but it holds moisture against you once soaked - in humidity, a wet cotton tee stays wet. Fine for dry heat, sticky in tropical conditions. 7/10.
4. Tencel/lyocell
Absorbs better than cotton and feels cool to the touch, with a drape that flatters. Loses points only for slightly less airflow than linen. 7/10, higher if you hate wrinkles.
5. Merino wool (lightweight)
Counterintuitive but real: 150-190gsm merino regulates temperature and handles sweat vapor better than cotton. The traveler's choice. 6/10.
6. Polyester and nylon
They dry fast but breathe poorly and trap odor - in heat, a polyester shirt is a personal greenhouse. Performance weaves with wicking finishes help briefly, then wash out. 3/10. Avoid for all-day summer wear.
Buying rule
For true heat: 100% linen or a linen-cotton blend, light color, loose weave you can see light through. Everything else is a compromise.
